We all know how it goes... the days start getting shorter, the temperatures colder and the winter blues start to kick in - it’s no wonder why our physical and mental health starts to go into decline.

Here at Sharethrough, November is Wellness Month where we prioritize staying physically active, maintaining mental and emotional well being, and cultivating a real sense of community to keep us together during the winter months. This year's Wellness Month was packed with a ton of fun and surprises: from yoga workouts, step challenges and meditation classes, to mental health conferences and resource sessions - Sharethrough employees had it all! Read more to learn about the 6 tools and activities we implemented to improve mental and physical health during Wellness Month.

How Sharethrough Incorporates Fitness Challenges During Wellness Month

1. Take a Team Break Mid-Day to Practice Yoga

Research has shown the importance of staying physically active during the winter months. According to one fitness expert, staying active in colder months helps increase endurance, burn fat and can even help in preventing seasonal affective disorder (SAD). And the benefits don’t stop at overall physical health. In fact, studies have shown workday exercise improves time management and workload completion by 72%.

To promote physical activity and keep our employees moving and engaged during the workday, I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to lead employees through a 45 minute-long yoga session, delivering a refreshing physical and mental break. The short 45-minute class at lunch time was a nice little break from our workday, allowing us to step away from our computers, to move, to breathe and exercise together.

Everyone is welcome to attend Sharethrough yoga classes — even cute pups!

2. Compete in Challenges With Your Colleagues

It’s no secret that we spend far too much time indoors. In fact, one study found that in North America & Europe, we spend over 90% of our time indoors… and this number only increases as the months grow colder!

Teamwork not only makes activities more engaging, but it holds us accountable too! As a way to get people active, outside, and engaged, our people team decided to host a series of challenges throughout wellness month. Sharethrough’s step challenge paired up employees to compete in a friendly competition to see who could reach the highest step count over the course of the month. Shoutout to Ariane Simonelis, Legal Counsel, on winning this challenge by walking a whopping 407,063 steps throughout the month of November!

Employees also engaged in a water drinking challenge, which focused on getting all employees to drink at least 8 cups of water per day by bringing a water bottle everywhere; setting reminders on your phone; and opting for water when eating out at restaurants.

Weekly walking challenges helped immerse Sharethrough employees in nature (even when the weather is chilly).

3. Don’t Be Shy to Ask Around For Tips & Tricks!

As a remote-first company, it’s our priority to ensure employees always feel connected, even when they aren’t together. According to a recent study, staying socially connected can do wonders for one’s mental health by staving off loneliness, and sharpening memory and cognitive skills. Throughout the month, Sharethrough employees were encouraged  to engage with one another, by sharing their favorite mental health tips, alongside healthy food recipes.

In addition to taking daily walks and participating in yoga sessions, we asked Sharethrough employees what else they did to stay active for the month of November. Employees shared a variety of different activities, such as hiking, swimming, spin classes and mountain biking. One even got their  sweat on by building a fireplace!

From mountain biking to fireplace building, Sharethrough employees found neat ways to stay active during Wellness Month!

4. Build a Mindfulness Practice

Studies show benefits are plenty when one engages in a daily meditation practice. It can aid in anxiety reduction, improving mood and memory, and increasing one’s focus.

Practicing mindfulness and meditation can be difficult for a beginner. Many have a hard time emptying their mind, and feel rather restless in the eerie silent atmosphere that’s required. However, once you get used to it, meditation can become an essential tool for battling stress, anxiety and even help one perform better at work.. Sharethrough’s Marketing Coordinator, Matthew Workman has been practicing meditation for the last five years, and as part of Wellness Month, he led Sharethrough employees for a 20 minute guided meditation session, showcasing several ways to build concentration and a sense of ease.

When asked about the importance of building a mindfulness meditation practice, Matthew said:  “For me, mindfulness is a superpower. The difference between living life being totally unaware of your thoughts and then having the ability to notice your thought patterns more closely feels like night and day. I believe a mindfulness practice is essential to growing as a person and listening to your mind and body as you go through life. It was an amazing experience to get to lead and share a mindfulness practice with my coworkers.”

As part of the meditation class, Sharethrough employees were given a free 30 day introductory course on the Waking Up App

5. Learn About Mental Health & Stigmas

Mental health has become an important topic in recent years. In fact, with 1 in 6.8 people experiencing mental health problems in the workplace, it’s become more important than ever for employers to pay more attention to supporting the mental health of employees.

This month, we were fortunate enough to have our telemedicine provider Dialoguegive a presentation to all Sharethrough employees on demystifying mental health issues and discovering their true nature. The presentation focused on the main causes of mental illnesses, characteristics, manifestations and treatments. Not only were the participants better able to contribute to the reduction of mental health problems at work, but they were also given the tools to better support those dealing with mental health problems.

6. Take Advantage Of The Resources Available To You!

Sharethrough prides itself on offering employees top tier insurance programs & wellness accounts to look after their mental health and physical needs. Part of the Wellness Month initiatives offered to employees was a mental health resources session, where employees received a full showcase of all the perks, initiatives and benefits available to them at the company.

Evelyne Deschamps talks about the importance of giving Sharethrough employees the tools to battle mental illness “1 out of 5 of people will battle mental illness at least once in their life. It is our responsibility as employers to ensure employees have the resources they need to support themselves when it comes to mental & physical health. Over and above, it’s not only about offering those resources, but also about making sure those resources are known and utilized. Yesterday’s session was a reminder of all our policies and resources that are at the hands of employees, and about opening up the conversation for people to ask their questions, raise concerns, and create a conversation about health in general.”

All in all, Sharethrough’s 2022 Wellness Month was one for the books! We’re grateful for everyone that participated and hope our employees will continue to utilize these tips and tricks throughout the new year. Looking forward to bringing back Wellness Month bigger & better than ever in 2023!
